Movie review: Hercules

Image
Movie review: Hercules Spoilers ahead.... This should have been a better flick than it was. The concept is intriguing: Hercules is really a fraud who does "hero" jobs for hire with his band of freaks, and has a good PR guy who spins the tales and turns them into legends. That has the makings of a very cool movie. But what we got really felt like a low-budget rip-off of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers .... except the dialogue was far more hackneyed and cliched. And it has some of the worst CGI fire effects I've ever seen in a film. The last 30 minutes after the plot twist is the best part of the movie. But following the prison break scene, it's hysterical how Hercules's wounds change severity and location on his body from one scene to the next. There wasn't even an attempt at continuity. All that said ... I didn't hate Hercules at all. I figured out early in the film what it was going to be and decided to view it as a glorified B-movie from th

Bird watching: A heron near Whitemud Drive

Bird watching: A heron near Whitemud Drive I'm hardly a bird expert, but I'm pretty sure that's a heron standing next to the pond. We saw it yesterday out on a bike ride in Edmonton, near Whitemud Drive and Fox Drive (just down the hill from the Talus Balls). Edmonton locals will know that this location is very close to the river and in our river valley park system, so it's hardly unusual to spot wildlife around those parts. But I've never, ever seen a heron inside the city before. View full size (780x701)

Our epic bike ride!

Image
Our epic bike ride! My wife and set a goal this summer that we would do a 50 km bike ride together. I have done several rides that long by myself but she has never gone that far. Today was the day we went for it, riding all the way from our place in west Edmonton to Rundle Park and back, plus a stop over for a food truck lunch at the Interstellar Rodeo at Hawrelak Park. All said and done we came in just short of 60 km in a little over 4 hours of riding time, and more than 6 hours out together on a fantastic day. I'm so proud of her! 7/27/14 (4 images) from Mike Jenkinson - Google+ Public Posts http://ift.tt/1lKzUtc via IFTTT

These are not photos from the Mars Rover

These are not photos from the Mars Rover No, that's the Sun, from Earth. Edmonton, to be precise. In a thick haze of smoke and ash from wildfires elsewhere that is obscuring the Sun and leaving us with a brown sky. And, for the record, these iPhone photos have not been altered, filtered or retouched in any way. #yeg   #alberta   #canada   #smoke   #Edmonton   7/16/14 (2 images) from Mike Jenkinson - Google+ Public Posts http://ift.tt/1nK2Vtp via IFTTT

Edmonton's gorgeous river valley

Image
Edmonton's gorgeous river valley There are lots of great things about living in this city, but the enormous swath of forested area in our river valley is amazing. It's fantastic that you can walk and cycle for miles and miles on trails in the middle of the city, yet be basically in the forest or parkland. These photos were taken off Whitemud Drive, along the path to the ski hill. 2014-07-15 (4 images) from Mike Jenkinson - Google+ Public Posts http://ift.tt/1zGF3vX via IFTTT

Google now editing my photos for me

Google now editing my photos for me In addition to the usual auto-awesome photos that Google+ has been doing - stitching related pictures together into animated GIF files, mainly - GOOG is now using their photo filters on the pictures that get backed up to Google+. Here are the three most recent examples of Google+ editing my photos. Now if only Google could find a way to take my pictures as well.... 2014-07-07 (3 images) from Mike Jenkinson - Google+ Public Posts http://ift.tt/1lNv4dO via IFTTT
