Movie review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Movie review: Guardians of the Galaxy

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

I remember the day the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer hit. I was ... skeptical. Puzzled. A bit worried. Marvel made a comedy? With obscure comic book characters? And they used Hooked on a Feeling as the music to sell a space movie? Are you kidding me?

But with each additional trailer I gradually warmed up on the movie, having hit "cautiously optimistic" by the time the movie came out and "excited" after reading some gushing reviews.

Yeah, this movie is AWESOME.

And I know that word gets thrown out a lot to describe things that are merely "very good."

But this movie is AWESOME. It had me tearing up in the first five minutes in the hospital scene, and then again near the end when the mysterious present gets opened. There's an emotional core to the movie that just works - and, yes, it involves songs like Hooked on a Feeling and the rest of the classic rock/golden oldies soundtrack. So that editorial choice in the trailers was no accident. It's a key to the film.

The characters are note perfect and the performances are terrific. And the best part it, you never feel stupid watching an animated raccoon as one of the main characters. In fact, Rocket is an absolute delight as a character. Ditto, Groot. (Pay very close attention to Groot's subtle nod when Quill asks Groot a question and then, before Groot can respond, says something to the effect of "Nevermind, the answer will be I am Groot." Groot's little nod is a great little moment.)

And, yes, this film is funny. Easily the most humor of any of the Marvel studio films. But it's not a "comedy." It's a rip-roaring, never-stop, space opera full of huge action scenes, menacing bad guys, THANOS's FLOATING THRONE and a whole lot more. It's tremendous fun. It's a great ride. And it leaves you wanting more.

(As an aside, I would bet that an Avengers/GOTG cross-over movie would earn approximately a gazillion trillion dollars at the box office.)

Go see this movie now!
