#ufc215 in #yeg

Last night was UFC's first (and, let's be realistic, probably only) stop in Edmonton for a PPV that saw the main event collapse just over a day out from showtime, and another main card fight pulled a few weeks ago because of USADA. Despite the changes, it was a really fun night - live UFC shows are almost always great. I was at the pretty terrible Winnipeg  PPV show a few years ago and still enjoyed it because that was my first live UFC event. Interesting personal trivia note: I've been to 4 live UFC shows, and this is the third time I've seen the UFC women's bantamweight title defended. I saw Rousey beat Tate in Vegas in 2013, I saw Nunes beat Rousey in Vegas earlier this year and last night Nunes successfully defended against Shevchenko. Most of my thoughts on the show were captured on Twitter last night and this morning, so I present this TWITTER MOMENT for your reading pleasure. ⚡️ “ #UFC215 in #yeg ” https://t.co/fwbzyhn5Dy — Mike Jenkinson (@Mi...

Christmas palm trees rule, and other random thoughts on a Monday

Image
My goal of watching all of Pride FC on UFC Fight Pass is on hold because, well, the first two weren't terribly interesting and it kind of killed my interest in it. Plus, there's been a lot of actual UFC on TV of late, and that's taken up a lot of my time. Christmas palm tress are awesome. We love ours. I have spent hours tweaking my template code on the blog trying to get Twitter cards to work properly. This post is really an excuse to try it out and see if it works as advertised. I'm also experimenting with some new Blogger to Twitter feeding tools, so when this appears multiple times on Twitter, I'm very sorry.

CM Punk signs with UFC

Image
The official press release is here . My thoughts, such as they are, including possibly some contradictory ones: Good on him for trying and not being Kurt Angle who talks a good game but never puts up and actually fights. That said, I wouldn't doubt for a moment that Punk never actually fights in UFC because in training he realizes how hard it really is and is quietly transitioned to a commentary role. I can easily see UFC delaying his debut until this time next year to give him a full year of hardcore MMA training. I can see UFC having to take his debut to Japan or Texas to either have no commission or a weak commission sanction a guy whose professional fighting record is 0-0. Is Punk a freakshow fight? Sure. But he's also a money-drawing fight in his debut, and, in the end, UFC is all about money. It's amazing that CM Punk managed to be 2014's most talked about professional wrestler despite having not actually wrestled since early 2014 and whose major publi...

Watching Pride FC: Pride 1

Image
I recently subscribed to UFC Fight Pass, and decided that instead of randomly watching stuff, I'd try to work my way through an entire promotion's tape library. And I'm starting with Pride Fighting Championship from Japan. I loved Pride back in the day, but never really got to see much of it in "real time" instead having to rely on the DVDs that eventually came out after the promotion went out of business and was purchased by UFC. But even at that, I've probably seen maybe 10 total Pride events, so this is a chance to work through the history of the entire promotion. Similar to how I did my reviews of the UFC 100 Greatest Fights (http://www.the-newsroom.com/p/ufc-100-greatest-fights-dvd-review.html) these reviews are going to be entirely from memory as I'm not taking notes while watching. Pride 1:   Kazunari Murakami vs John Dixson : These 2 guys are about 15 weight classes apart and Dixson looks like he's eaten several smaller fighters. Dixson i...

A rant about the #UFC light-heavyweight title situation

Where to watch UFC 142 in Edmonton and Calgary

There's a UFC PPV this weekend, and it's not going to do a whole lot of business because neither Jose Aldo nor Chad Mendes is anywhere near a drawing card. And I'd hook you up with the usual Canadastar list of bars, but as of Friday afternoon, the new website is under construction . Plus, the semi-main event may be cancelled, live on PPV . Which really makes this post kind of useless, doesn't it?

It's a rare Friday PPV for UFC, with Lesnar vs. Overeem capping off the year for the fighting group in what should be a fight of Hobbesian proportions: nasty, brutish and short. But in a good way. So if you want to go see it in a bar, here's the link .

It's UFC PPV weekend (again), and my current favorite fighter, Mr. Bones Jones, is defending his light heavyweight title against former champion Lyoto Machida. Sadly, I'm unavailable to watch the show this weekend, but you should! Here's the link to find a bar .

Belated UFC 137 thoughts

Image
I watched this card over at my brother's house as he wanted to show off his new home theatre, but if he hadn't invited us over, I probably would not have bought it on my own, given that the GSP-Condit title fight was pulled a couple of weeks ago due to injury. If Dana White wants to know why buyrates are down, well, if this had been a WWE show, it would have been headlined by, I dunno, Chris Jericho vs. James Storm, with a semi-main event of Zack Ryder vs. Big Zeke. There's no way that Mitrione vs. Kongo is a semi-main event on PPV. A year ago, that fight would have barely made the Spike TV prelims. UFC really has to start loading up the PPV cards and make them seem special. And when this show was over, basically all I remembered was: 1) Diaz's promo and GSP's "ooh, I'm scared" gesture 2) The apparent retirement of BJ Penn 3) The apparent retirement of Cro Cop ... and that's about it. Don't get me wrong - the main event was a fun f...

It's UFC weekend again, and so here's your link to finding a bar to watch Penn vs. Diaz. With the GSP title fight off the card due to injury, I'm not predicting big business for this show (and isn't that going out on a limb?) Still, it should be a fun card.

This could be the sleeper card of 2011. Edgar-Maynard II was awesome, Aldo vs. Florian should be really good, and the rest of the card looks pretty freaking amazing. So if you're looking for a bar in Edmonton, Calgary or other spots in Alberta to watch this, here's your link .

Today's sporting news

Image
Picture from Jets website The Winnipeg Jets unveiled their new jerseys today and I think they look fantastic. Pictures  here on the Jets website . Needless to say, this is high on my Christmas list. Having grown up in Winnipeg, I'm thrilled to have the Jets back. And the other big sporting news today is that Brock Lesnar is returning to the octagon on Dec. 30 to battle Alistair Overeem . That's going to be great, epic battle and will get approximately a billion gajillion PPV buys. Yeah, yeah, I know... only hardcore MMA fans know who Overeem is, but that will change by December 30.

UFC just saved me $50

Image
I was going to buy the November 19 PPV card featuring the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos heavyweight title match, but UFC announced today that the fight has been moved to the November 12 debut on FOX. How UFC fills that rather large gap in their November 19 card ... well, good thing that's not my problem. Whether Cain and JDS can become mainstream stars and household names out of this is also not my problem. But I do have $50 extra in my pocket now, and that's a good thing for me.

There's a UFC PPV tonight and heaven knows why you'd buy it because it's a really weak card (due to the main event light weight title match getting pulled due to injury). Nonetheless, should you want to find a bar to watch it here is the link .
