What's the point of an e-book ...?

Image
... that's more expensive than the hard cover? Here's a screen cap from Amazon.com and Dick Cheney's new book: The hard cover is $19.05. The Kindle (i.e., electronic book price) is $24.53. I do note that Amazon has the "This price was set by the publisher" disclaimer below the price as if to say, "Don't email us about this, we don't want to hear it!" Still, what possible logic could there to charging less to print, bind a ship a book than to transfer bits to my e-reader? Meanwhile, the Cheney book is only $20.99 on Kobo , so I think I'll be buying it there instead.  Competition. Gotta love it.

Actually, it does get weirder than Undertaker in a suit

Inspired by this .

Saturday morning weigh in - 175 lbs.

Meh. Up 0.2 lbs. from last week, which is margin of error stuff, really. And I suspect some of that is still remnants of Wednesday's big banquet dinner I ate. Soooooo good.

Review: Aaron Shust - This is What We Believe

Image
It's a fantastic day for music. In addition to the fabulous new Downhere album out today (see review on this page), Aaron Shust's new record, "This is What We Believe" is also out today, and it's just terrific. Energetic and upbeat, it's a worship album that's a winner from start to finish. It's pretty much everything I like in music: great arrangements, soaring vocals, a good beat.... it's been a tough competition the last couple of weeks to see what gets more play on my iPhone: this album or "On the Altar of Love." Big thumbs up for this album.

Review: Downhere - On the Altar of Love

Image
Buy this album! I'm going to skip the prelude and get right to the point: Buy this! Buy this now! I love this album. Thanks to the good folks at Centricity, I've been listening to it for the last three weeks, and before that, thanks to the band "leaking" tracks on Facebook, I'd heard about half of it before my advance CD arrived in the mail. It's easily my favorite Downhere album to date. It's easily the best album of Downhere's career. And it's already been declared " one of the best albums of the year " by New Release Tuesday. I can't argue with that. The strength of "On the Altar of Love" is the sum of its parts. While no individual song on the album may be the best piece of music Downhere has ever done (and that's debatable - "Let Me Rediscover You" might be the new "A Better Way"), overall, this is an album filled with so many good to great songs that you will want to listen to the en

Saturday morning weigh in - 174.8 lbs.

Image
It's the return of the ever-popular Saturday morning weigh in feature on the blog, mainly because my weight is creeping back up again and I want to not get too far from my 170 lbs. goal, which I  successfully accomplished  back in the spring through the power of Internet shame. So, this time we're starting at 174.8 lbs, and not over 180 lbs, which is a plus. But of late my weight has been in the 176-lbs. range which is too much over 170 to be "margin of error." Next update next Saturday.

Another "Cake by Nicole"

Image
My wife gets co-credit on this cake, as it was a team effort, but this is Nicole's latest cake creation. This was for her aunt's birthday party. Looked fabulous and tasted delicious. You can't see it in this picture (as the cake is uncut) but we used homemade ganache in it for the first time. Yum! For a part-time hobby, she's pretty good at this stuff. More of Nicole's cakes can be seen in the videos below.

Things I learned from Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Image
My wife and I finally got around to seeing Transformers 3 yesterday. Herein, the life lessons learned from this piece of cinema: The Transformers are big fans of Star Trek A good pair of high heel shoes will never come off. Ever. White jackets will retain their pure whiteness at all times. Hey, I didn't say it was a particularly long list of life lessons....

Where to watch UFC 133 in Edmonton and Calgary

I haven't done one of these in a while, and, frankly, they're good for boosting the visibility of my blog so, here's my semi-usual link on where to find a bar to watch UFC 133 in Edmonton, Calgary, or any other part of Alberta .
